Short answer

Grounds depend on the principal obligation and suretyship term. The Code provides three months’ termination notice for indefinite suretyship and a corresponding rule after five years for fixed-term suretyship. Existing obligations do not automatically disappear.

Practical example

A surety announces withdrawal after falling out with the borrower. Personal conflict alone does not end the debt or suretyship.

What to do

Check term, balance and notice rules. Send notice with receipt evidence and an effective date. Seeking release from the principal debtor has separate grounds and does not always immediately release liability to the creditor.

Legal basis

Georgian Civil Code — Articles 893, 903, 904. Checked on 28 October 2026. The outcome depends on the contract, facts and evidence.
