Short answer
A surety assumes liability to the creditor for another person’s obligation within contractual and statutory limits. It is not a reference or witness signature. The maximum amount and liability type matter.
Practical example
Someone signs to help a friend, but the document creates joint and several surety liability. The friend’s default may expose the surety’s property.
What to do
Review the principal agreement, term, interest and sanctions. Check the cap and covered components. Obtain copies and balance information. Later amendments do not automatically increase surety liability.
Legal basis
Georgian Civil Code — Articles 891, 892, 893, 898, 902. Checked on 28 October 2026. The outcome depends on the contract, facts and evidence.
