Short answer

Liability depends on cause, fault, ordinary wear, transferred inventory and contractual allocation of risk. A duty to return property does not mean automatic liability for every accidental loss.

Practical example

Damage caused by ignoring safety rules differs from an old machine’s natural wear. Inventory transferred at an agreed valuation may carry special risk rules.

What to do

Prepare an initial inventory and condition report. Preserve damaged items, document the cause and notify the other party. Check insurance, maintenance schedules and special contractual duties.

Legal basis

Georgian Civil Code — Articles 394, 547, 583, 584. Checked on 28 October 2026. The outcome depends on the contract, facts and evidence.
