A safe power of attorney is tailored to its purpose. Sale, gift, mortgage and receipt of the price grant different opportunities; choose each power deliberately.
Practical example
An apartment seller may only need to authorise sale of one property at a minimum price, with payment directly into the principal’s account.
What to do
Specify the property, duration, delegation rights, reporting and payment arrangements. Permit self-dealing only if that is genuinely intended.
Points to consider
On revocation, notifying the representative and relevant third parties also matters. Keeping the original at home alone does not provide protection.
