Short answer

Where the law provides, descendants of a deceased child inherit by representation the share that their parent would have received. Grandchildren do not invariably divide the entire estate directly and equally.

Practical example

The deceased had one surviving child and one predeceased child who left two children. The grandchildren participate through their parent’s line.

What to do

Prepare a family tree and every connecting birth and death record. Check for a will and other first-ranking heirs.

Points to consider

A parent’s refusal of an inheritance has different consequences from that parent dying before the estate opens.
