Short answer

Refusal is permitted in the form and manner prescribed by law. The general period is three months from when the heir learned or should have learned that they were called to inherit. This is distinct from the six-month acceptance period.

Practical example

An heir assumes a letter to a relative is sufficient. Refusal must be properly formalised before the notarial authority.

What to do

Assess assets, debts and the other heirs first. Tell the notary whether you have already accepted by application or conduct.

Points to consider

Refusal has significant financial consequences. A private promise to pay you later does not itself make refusal safe.
