Short answer

Someone outside the family may inherit under a will. Property may be left to one or several people, subject to compulsory shares and the fact that you can dispose only of your own property rights.

Practical example

An apartment is left to a friend. If part belongs to the spouse, the will does not itself alter the spouse’s ownership of that part.

What to do

Identify the beneficiary, their identifying details and the property precisely. Consider whether a substitute beneficiary should be named.

Points to consider

Helping someone during life does not itself create inheritance rights: a proper will or another lawful basis is needed.
